Arcachon Ville de Printemps

Pereire and Les Abatilles: Arcachon with room to breathe

West of the town centre, the Ville de Printemps brings together two neighbourhoods: Pereire, right on the water, and Les Abatilles, backing onto the forest. Further on still, Le Moulleau extends the town towards Le Pyla. This is the Arcachon of long beaches and villas under the pines, more residential and more open than the centre.

The legacy of the Pereire family

The neighbourhood is named after the family who made Arcachon. In 1859, Émile Pereire bought around fifty hectares beyond the Chapelle and, from 1862, had his villa built there. Napoleon III was received there in 1863, and King Alfonso XII of Spain in 1879.

The villa was demolished in the late 1950s and the estate was divided into plots. Only the former stables, on avenue du Parc Pereire, survive from that era. The park has been listed as a picturesque site since 1943.

Pereire beach

This is Arcachon’s biggest beach. Together with the Abatilles and Arbousiers beaches, it forms a ribbon of sand about three kilometres long, lined by a walking and cycling promenade that is accessible to wheelchair users.

Across the water is Cap Ferret. At low tide, a sandbank appears and you can walk out into the middle of the Bassin. The beach has lifeguards in summer, is smoke-free, and every June it hosts the Jumping des Sables, a show-jumping competition on the sand.

The Parc Pereire and the villas under the pines

Between the beach and the villas, the Parc Pereire is a large wooded park open to everyone: paths for walking, running or cycling, outdoor fitness equipment, a skate park, a playground and a big lawn facing the Bassin.

Around it, the estate was designed to preserve the spirit of the place: large plots, hedges rather than walls, and houses that are often single-storey. That is what gives the neighbourhood its feel of villas set in the pine forest.

Living in Ville de Printemps

The Arcachon tennis club, a thalassotherapy centre and a Basque pelota fronton (the walled court for this Basque ball game) are just round the corner, and the Arcachon international golf course is very close by, in the neighbouring town. For shops and cafés, Le Moulleau is a few minutes away, and the town centre is still easy to reach.

It is a neighbourhood that families really look for, both as a main home and as a holiday house. When I look at a property here, I pay particular attention to the size and orientation of the plot, how close it is to the beach, and how quiet the lane is.

If you are thinking of settling in Arcachon, or of selling a property here, I would be delighted to talk it through with you.
