If there is one place in Bordeaux where I love to spend time, it is, without hesitation, the Marché des Chartrons square. With its village feel in the heart of the city, its lively terraces and its convivial atmosphere, it has become, over the years, one of my favourite neighbourhoods. Now entirely pedestrian, the square is especially pleasant at the end of the day. People gather after work for a drink, dinner with friends, or simply to enjoy the ever-lively atmosphere.
Le Carré — lunch on the terrace
Le Carré has been one of the square’s institutions for many years. It is exactly the kind of restaurant where I know I will have a good time, whether for lunch or dinner. Personally, I go mostly at midday, regularly, and as soon as the sun comes out, I choose the terrace. But I have also spent some lovely evenings there.
What I order almost every time, year after year? The scallops with cep ravioli and a beurre blanc. A dish I never tire of. With a good glass of wine, it is, for me, the perfect lunch.
But beyond the plate, what I particularly appreciate here is the welcome. Ben, the owner, and his whole team always have a smile. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed and sincere. You simply feel good there.
And if you like a more festive mood, note that on Thursday evenings Le Carré changes its tempo. Tapas, music and DJ sets take over in a convivial, buzzing atmosphere that draws many regulars. An excellent address to carry on the evening on the Chartrons square.
La Pointe — the flavours of the sea
When I feel like fish or seafood, I head to La Pointe. From the moment you walk in, I love the décor, which echoes the spirit of Arcachon Bay. But what I enjoy most is the large counter open onto the kitchen, where you can watch the cooks at work.
At the helm, Norbert and his team welcome their guests with contagious energy and a great deal of kindness. For me, a restaurant is not only about what is on the plate. The welcome matters enormously, and here it is always there.
The house speciality is, of course, the sea. You can enjoy magnificent oysters from the Bay, generous seafood platters to share, as well as the catch of the day, chosen according to what comes in.
Bermeo — tapas evenings
For drinks with friends, my go-to address remains Bermeo. Here, the direction is Spain, with its generous flavours and its large, convivial tables.
Titou and his team know how to host with simplicity and good humour. You find that same warm atmosphere that makes you want to linger.
Among my must-haves: the croquetas, the Iberian ham, the fried calamari, the patatas bravas, or the gambas to share over a glass of wine.
Le Carré for lunch on the terrace, La Pointe for the flavours of the sea, and Bermeo for tapas evenings with friends: together, the three perfectly sum up what I love about the spirit of the Chartrons. Restaurants where you eat well, of course, but above all places where you are welcomed with a smile and where it is always a pleasure to return.
